Alex George Poulos Naples: Food on the Table

Alex George Poulos, a Naples, Florida native, developed a strong social conscience at an early age following a brief encounter with a homeless man he gave a small sum of money to. “I saw his humanity,” he says today. “It’s something that I have never forgotten. I was safe, sitting in my dad’s car, and handing this poor guy five bucks. I was only about ten years old and couldn’t understand how someone could be reduced to that – to standing by the road with one of those ‘will work for food’ signs.”

That memory remains strong in the adult Alex George Poulos from Naples. He has volunteered many hours of his time with Habitat for Humanity in Atlanta, where he currently lives and works, and is the founder of Food on the Table, a nonprofit that collects and distributes nutritious surplus food that is otherwise destined for the garbage.

He says that he was inspired to launch Food on the Table after seeing a newspaper article about a local group of people called Freegans. “I’d never heard of the concept before,” Alex George Poulos from Naples says. “These people, these Freegans – they essentially live off of stuff they reclaim from the garbage. According to that article they can find all sorts of stuff, but it was the food aspect that really got my attention.” The Freegans had developed a system of retrieving edible foods from trash dumpsters behind restaurants – “The waste is unbelievable,” he says. The retrieved food is still perfectly good.

“So I took that idea, and with a lot of talking and arranging and bargaining, I’ve set up a system of reclaiming and distributing food to those who need it most.” He says it a sense it is a glorified food bank, but through his efforts thousands of homeless people in the Atlanta area have found a reliable food source in Food on the Table.

“I didn’t play much soccer when I was a kid,” says Alex George Poulos from Naples. “I played enough so that I know most of the rules. But I was really wet behind the ears when it came to being a coach.”

But he learned, and with the help of some more experienced parents who were his assistant coaches, Alex George Poulos developed into an excellent coach himself. He says that he is still learning and still getting better, but has learned enough to share some thoughts on the subject.

One of his key responsibilities is to be a good role model, he says. “That’s especially true when you’re coaching a kid’s team, but it stays true as they get older,” says Alex George Poulos from Naples. He says that he emphasizes having fun over winning, and as a result he has always had good bunches of kids who like the game, are not sore losers, and have a pretty good win-loss record. “It’s a matter of showing respect for the kids on the team, and for your opponents, the referees, and others,” he says.

Alex George Poulos Naples: Pilot’s License

Alex George Poulos is a licensed private pilot and the co-owner of a 1977 Cessna 182 Skylane RG. He has been flying aircraft of one kind or another since he was in high school, and he says that flying is one of the most beautiful experiences he can imagine.

“It’s like poetry,” he says. “Being up there, interacting with wind and machine – it’s the best thing I can imagine.”

His very first experience flying on his own was in an ultralight aircraft he assembled from a kit. He had a lot of help from his father, who was himself a licensed pilot and Air Force veteran. Later he was able to being taking pilot lessons, beginning with flying gliders.

“It takes a lot of time, money and commitment to get your private pilot’s license,” says Alex George Poulos from Naples. “I was lucky because I got a break on some of the pricing through my dad’s connections. It still cost a lot, though.”

After making sure he met all of the eligibility requirements, Alex George Poulos got his Student Pilot certificate and aviation medical certificate, which essentially certified that he was in sound physical condition to fly. Then he began training with a flight instructor and after logging enough hours, took and passed his FAA exam.

Three years ago Alex George Poulos from Naples shared the cost of a used Cessna single engine plane with his business associate Dennis Martin, and the two have had the plane ever since. Alex says that the furthest he has flown the plane was a weekend trip to Hilton Head, where he and his wife enjoyed a long weekend playing golf.

Alex George Poulos from Naples says that he treats customers like friends. “That means I don’t give anybody any slick sales pitch. I let the jewelry speak for itself.”

As The Diamond Man, Alex George Poulos from Naples offers his customers not just fine jewelry, but everything from simple pendants to Rolex watches. Diamonds, however, are his real specialty, and he imports them from Israel, Belgium and India. “Most of them come from Israel and India,” he explains. “I can’t tell you why, but if I’ve learned anything in ten years it’s that the diamonds from those markets are cut better than those from other markets. So the discerning diamond customer who really cares about the cut is going to prefer those from Israel or India.”
